About Katie Smith

Born in Denver, Colorado, Katie Smith (b. 1997) is an artist and designer who explores mental health, connection with nature, and women’s rights.

Katie attended Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington, earning degrees in two-dimensional arts and graphic design. Currently, Katie is teaching art at Basalt Elementary where she served the previous year through ArtistYear. ArtistYear is an AmeriCorps program that places art grads in low-income schools across the country to ensure all students have the opportunity to reap the social-emotional and academic benefits associated with arts learning.

Katie has won multiple awards, including the Spokane Arts Grant Award (SAGA) and the Humanities Washington Apprenticeship Grant. Her SAGA grant project, created with collaborators Hannah Pomante and Melissa Jones, was a large-scale eco-friendly moveable bird nest. It was transported throughout Spokane, bringing art and nature to the youth of Spokane. While the Humanities Washington Apprenticeship Grant enabled her to continue apprenticing under Spokane-based Master Printmaker Bethany Taylor, learning and conserving the traditional craft of letterpress printmaking.

“The Movement is a sort of mosaic. Each of us puts a little stone, and then you get a great mosaic at the end.”

Katie would love to place a stone in a mosaic with you. She is self-represented and takes clients on a limited basis. Inquire about her availability:
